India’s largest conglomerate, Tata Group, is venturing into chipmaking with the construction of two semiconductor factories in Gujarat and Assam. The $11 billion Gujarat plant will employ 20,000 workers and produce 50,000 silicon wafers monthly, while the $3 billion Assam facility will have 27,000 employees packaging chips into processing units. Tata Group is partnering with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation of Taiwan for the Gujarat project and going solo in Assam. This move reflects Tata’s ambition to capitalize on the Indian government’s goal of transforming the country into a high-tech manufacturing hub. Under the leadership of chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Tata Group is shifting from a restructuring phase to a growth phase, aiming to play a significant role in the industry. When Chandrasekaran took over Tata Sons in 2017, the group was struggling due to failed acquisitions and business ventures. However, with this new venture, Tata Group is poised to make a significant impact in the chipmaking industry. For more details, you can visit www.economist.com.
