US President Joe Biden has criticized the economic policies of his predecessor and potential 2024 election opponent Donald Trump, highlighting that the United States experienced job losses during the former Republican president’s time in office.
In a speech in Philadelphia to commemorate the US Labor Day holiday on Monday, Biden repeatedly targeted Trump’s track record as president.
“It wasn’t too long ago that we were losing jobs in this country,” stated Biden, who is expected to prioritize his administration’s employment and economic policies in his 2024 re-election campaign.
“In fact, the individual who held this position before me was only one of two presidents in history to leave office with fewer jobs in America than when he was elected.”
When Trump departed the White House in early 2021, the US and global economies were severely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak, resulting in the loss of millions of jobs. However, the Trump administration asserts that it achieved historically low unemployment rates prior to the pandemic.
