Belarus has initiated a sudden inspection of tactical nuclear weapons, following the announcement by the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding exercises with similar armaments on May 6.
According to the Belarusian agency, President Alexander Lukashenko has given the directive for these exercises. The drills will involve the operational-tactical complex “Iskander” and a squadron of Su-25 aircraft, as confirmed by Belarusian Defense Minister Victor Khrenin. The aim is to test the full range of activities, from planning to the actual use of tactical nuclear munitions.
Additionally, Alexander Volfovich, the Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council, mentioned that the military will practice delivering nuclear munitions to designated vehicles. The decision for this inspection is attributed to the current military-political situation, particularly concerning Belarus. It is synchronized with similar activities conducted by Russia, focusing on the use of non-strategic nuclear munitions.
On the same day, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced its own exercises involving tactical nuclear weapons. The General Staff is preparing for drills with missile units from the Southern Military District, along with aviation and naval forces. These tactical nuclear forces are being readied to respond to provocations and threats from Western officials against Russia.
While Russia regularly conducts exercises with strategic nuclear weapons, this marks the first known instance of training with tactical nuclear weapons, adding a new dimension to military preparedness.
