When it comes to the semiconductor market, Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) and Micron Technologies (NASDAQ: MU) are the dark horses. AMD holds the second position globally in x86 CPUs and discrete GPUs, trailing behind Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) respectively. On the other hand, Micron is the third-largest manufacturer of DRAM chips and the fourth-largest supplier of NAND chips. The top spots in both DRAM and NAND markets are dominated by Samsung and SK Hynix.
Despite being underdogs, AMD and Micron possess unique strengths that set them apart from the competition.
AMD, by leveraging Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing for production, offers CPUs that are denser, more affordable, and energy-efficient compared to Intel. Additionally, AMD’s GPUs are more budget-friendly than Nvidia’s. Micron, on the other hand, operates its own foundries and produces memory chips that are denser than those of its South Korean rivals.
