Baldur’s Gate 3 is anticipated to be an exciting reimagining of DnD in a game, with the inclusion of gruesome elements for added realism. As per the ESRB rating, the game was already known to contain nudity and explicit content. However, observant users have also noticed that Larian Studios will apparently incorporate gameplay and meticulously crafted torture scenes into the project. While the rating does not explicitly label these actions as torture, the described methods that players can employ are undeniably torturous.
The methods outlined in the rating will be utilized to coerce enemies into revealing important information if the player chooses to employ them. These optional tactics can alter the dynamics of gameplay, uncovering hidden fragments of information that would otherwise remain unnoticed.
In one instance, players opt for violent methods to extract information from a prisoner (such as using a hot poker to strike their thigh, stabbing their groin with a spear, or removing toenails); most of these actions occur off-screen, but the prisoner’s reaction to pain is visible.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players will have the opportunity to witness the suffering of enemies, hear screams of pain, and encounter other cynical scenes. However, the torture scenes themselves will take place off-screen. On the other hand, dialogue choices will allow players to opt for less brutal alternatives if they do not intend to torture their enemies.
Furthermore, Baldur’s Gate 3 features numerous mature scenes depicting violence and bloodshed, including ”decapitation of a man off-screen with the severed head raised, dismemberment of a woman with exposed innards, extraction of a character’s brain from the skull, gouging out the eyes of a tied-up person.” Mutilated corpses and copious amounts of blood will also be characteristic of the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a sprawling open-world role-playing game developed by the creators of the Divinity: Original Sin series. Larian announced a one-month delay in the PC release date, shifting it from August 31 to September 3, in order to avoid clashing with Bethesda’s Starfield, which is set to release in early September. The PlayStation 5 version has also been slightly postponed to September 6, while the release dates for the Xbox Series X and S versions have yet to be announced (more details about the delay of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox can be found here).
In an interview, Vincke stated that, according to the developers’ estimation, a standard playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 takes between 75 to 100 hours. However, players who wish to “do everything” should expect to double that figure.
