Amsterdam has launched a new online campaign to tackle nuisance tourism and is asking young British men to “stay away” if they plan to visit the city to cut loose and “go wild”. The city’s local authority announced the campaign this week, which targets visitors between the ages of 18 and 35.

The campaign uses video advertisements to warn British tourists of the consequences of drinking too much, taking drugs, or causing trouble through antisocial behavior. If tourists search online for terms such as “stag party Amsterdam,” “cheap hotel Amsterdam” or “pub crawl Amsterdam,” the video advertisement will appear.

One video shows a drunk young man being arrested. The accompanying text says: “Coming to Amsterdam for a messy night + getting trashed = €140 fine + criminal record = fewer prospects.” It adds: “So coming to Amsterdam for a messy night? Stay away.”

The campaign aims to reduce the number of tourists who visit Amsterdam to engage in excessive drinking and drug use, which has led to complaints from residents about noise, litter, and public urination. The city hopes that the campaign will encourage tourists to visit Amsterdam for its cultural attractions and scenic beauty instead.
