Shortly after Alphabet and Google CEO Sudar Pichai warned of potential job attrition, the company is downsizing its staff at its moonshot lab. Alphabet is also reorganizing X (not to be confused with the former Twitter) to facilitate the launch of projects with financial support from external investors.
Astro Teller, the head of X division, informed employees in a memo that the company is “expanding our approach to focus on launching more projects as independent companies funded through market-based capital.”
X has endeavored to address global challenges such as climate change, the future of the internet, and cybersecurity, but its spinoff businesses have not consistently succeeded. The company aims to redirect ambitious ideas into those with potential.
