The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has received rave reviews, with many players claiming it surpasses its predecessor, Breath of the Wild. This is a remarkable achievement, as BOTW was widely regarded as one of the best Zelda games and video games of all time. As a sequel to such a beloved title, TOTK had big shoes to fill.
Our Screen Rant review, along with many others, has given TOTK a perfect score. While the game is not without its flaws, it is a must-play and a strong contender for Game of the Year in 2023. BOTW won Game of the Year in 2017, and many doubted that Tears of the Kingdom could match its quality. However, it not only met the challenge but even exceeded expectations in many ways.
TOTK expands on BOTW’s already vast open-world map, introducing Sky Islands and underground areas that add to the game’s exploration factor. The developers have also improved on the audio cue for locating shrines, making it more subtle and less annoying. With over 150 shrines to discover, this small detail makes a big difference.
Ganondorf, the iconic villain of the Zelda franchise, returns in TOTK after BOTW’s mutated enemy, Calamity Ganon. While the primal creature was an interesting change, bringing back the traditional Ganondorf is a treat for longtime fans. Additionally, the talented Matt Mercer voices Ganondorf, adding to the game’s immersive experience.
