Engineers have begun the ultimate stage of Webb’s main structural deployments: the unfolding of its two main mirror wings. These facet panels, which have been folded again for launch, every maintain three of the observatory’s 18 hexagonal, gold-coated mirror segments.

The staff is starting immediately with the mirror wing on the port (left) facet of the observatory. Engineers should first launch mechanisms that held the wing in place for launch, in an effort to enable the wing to deploy. The panel then rotates into place, a motor-driven course of that takes about 5 minutes. Once the wing is prolonged, engineers start a meticulous, two-hour course of to securely latch it into place.

The deployment of the second main mirror wing, deliberate for tomorrow, will comply with the identical course of.
