A recent cyberattack targeted documents and workstations at the US Treasury Department, as reported by The New York Times. The attack has been attributed to a ”China state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat actor” and is considered a significant cybersecurity breach.
On December 8, the Treasury Department was alerted to the issue by BeyondTrust, a third-party software company, who discovered that a security key meant for technical support had been used to access workstations and unclassified documents.
The Treasury Department has collaborated with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI to investigate the extent of the breach.
