Generative AI is truly a wonder of modern technology. However, there are concerns about its foundation.
Upon first glance, the footballers created by AI seem realistic, but upon closer examination, something seems amiss. Their faces are distorted, limbs bending unnaturally, and the ball appearing slightly misshapen. What’s most peculiar is the faint watermark of Getty Images running across one player’s leg.
Generative AI has sparked a surge in creative output, from writing to music, images, and videos. The online realm is brimming with AI-generated content, while investment in AI is booming. OpenAI, a leader in generative AI, is valued at nearly $90 billion, and its partner Microsoft has claimed the title of the world’s most valuable company with a market capitalization of $3.2 trillion.
Yet, questions linger about the true creativity of this technology and whether those profiting from it have adequately compensated the creators whose work trained the models. ChatGPT from OpenAI can replicate lengthy newspaper articles it seems to have memorized. Claude, a chatbot by Anthropic, can echo lyrics from popular songs. Stable Diffusion by Stability AI can mimic elements of others’ images, even incorporating Getty’s watermark from the archive it was trained on.
