Komodo dragons have teeth that are incredibly strong due to the presence of iron. This unique feature sets them apart from other reptiles, such as beavers, whose toughness comes from iron-infused enamel. The iron in Komodo dragon teeth is layered on top of the enamel, giving them a robust structure similar to icing on a cake.
Researchers, led by paleontologist Aaron LeBlanc from King’s College London, studied the teeth of meat-eating dinosaurs to understand their cutting abilities. They used Komodo dragons as a modern comparison due to their large size and blade-shaped teeth. Upon closer examination, the team discovered orange stains on the tooth tips and serrated edges, which turned out to be a layer of iron.
Further analysis through chemical and structural imaging revealed that this iron layer is a unique trait in Komodo dragons. Unlike other modern reptiles like monitor lizards, crocodiles, and alligators, Komodo dragons have visible signs of iron on their teeth. This finding suggests that the presence of iron in teeth may be common among modern meat-eating reptiles.
