The giant water bug, also known as the electric light bug, is a formidable predator, preying on a variety of creatures. Measuring up to 12 cm, it is the largest European true bug and water insect. Its appearance on the eastern coast of Cyprus initially surprised swimmers, who reported their findings to experts and shared photos and videos on social media.
Researchers have collected specimens for further study and conducted an extensive online search for additional sightings. Despite sampling nearby wetlands, the bug has not been spotted elsewhere on the island.
