Historic levels of rainfall and flooding in southern Brazil, as witnessed in this aerial view over Porto Alegre on May 6, 2024, have given rise to various conspiracy theories.
The catastrophic climate events in southern Brazil, resulting in over a hundred fatalities and displacing nearly two million individuals, have also led to the emergence of peculiar conspiracy theories. Some of these theories involve the vapor trails of jets and weather manipulation devices in distant Alaska.
During times of disaster and confusion, such as the current situation, these theories tend to spread rapidly on social media platforms.
“The situation in Rio Grande do Sul is clearly not natural,” expressed a woman on the X platform. “We need to be vigilant!”
She attributed the anomalies to HAARP—the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program—a US initiative that investigates the ionosphere using large antennas in Alaska.
Various individuals have shared images of airplanes crisscrossing the skies above the severely affected state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, claiming that the condensation trails left by these jets contain harmful substances as part of a covert government operation.
Collectively, these theories present a foreboding narrative that questions climate change while pointing fingers at governments and scientific organizations for allegedly orchestrating “planned disasters” for unclear reasons.
