Ukraine is preparing for further Russian attacks in response to its incursion into the Kursk region, with Russia sending reinforcements including troops, tanks, artillery, and rocket systems.
Russian news agencies reported on Saturday that Russia had implemented ”anti-terrorism measures” in three regions bordering Ukraine.
The National Anti-Terrorism Committee in Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk announced measures such as possible evacuations, transport restrictions, increased security around key sites, and surveillance of communications.
The decision was made by Alexander Bortnikov, head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), in reaction to Ukraine’s actions to destabilize the region.
Following Ukraine’s surprise offensive in Kursk, Russia’s Ministry of Defence is deploying more troops and weapons near the border in preparation for a counteroffensive.
President Vladimir Putin labeled Ukraine’s incursion a “large-scale provocation,” with Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov vowing to defeat it.
Russia had already declared a state of emergency in Kursk at a federal level.
On Friday, a Russian missile hit a supermarket in Kostiantynivka, Ukraine, killing 14 people and injuring 43 others.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating that innocent civilians were targeted in the strike.
Kostiantynivka is located near the front-line in Ukraine’s conflict zone.
