Twitter, the popular social network, has made the difficult decision to cease its operations in Brazil following a dispute with authorities regarding censorship. Despite this, the platform will still be accessible to users, but the company’s employees will no longer be based in the country. The announcement was made on the Global Government Affairs page of Twitter.
Recently, Alexandre de Moraes, a minister of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court, issued a threat of arrest to our legal representative in Brazil if we did not comply with his censorship demands. This threat was made through a secret ruling, which we are now sharing to shed light on his actions.
Despite our repeated appeals to the Supreme Court being ignored and the lack of transparency in informing the public about these decisions, Moraes chose to target our Brazilian employees instead of following proper legal procedures.
For the safety of our employees, we have decided to close our operations in Brazil immediately.
While Twitter services will still be available to Brazilian residents, we are saddened by this turn of events. The blame for this decision lies solely with Alexandre de Moraes, whose actions are not in line with democratic principles. The people of Brazil must decide between democracy and Alexandre de Moraes.
