Instagram is now accessible in Turkey again following negotiations with the social media platform regarding censorship and crime-related content. The agreement was announced by Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu on X. After being blocked for over a week, users in Turkey regained access to Instagram on August 2 without an official explanation for the initial ban.
The decision to block Instagram came after accusations from Turkey’s head of communications, Fahrettin Altun, claiming that the platform was censoring posts mourning the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Uraloglu expressed concerns about content related to catalog crimes, such as murder, sexual assault, drug trafficking, and torture, as well as censorship affecting Instagram users. NetBlocks, the organization that first reported the block, confirmed the restoration of access on Saturday.
