Nikola founder Trevor Milton has been sentenced to four years in prison for defrauding investors of the embattled electric- and hydrogen-powered truck maker.
Milton has also been fined $1 million and may have to forfeit property as part of the sentence.
The sentence is lower than the 11 years requested by prosecutors in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
However, it is significantly higher than the probation sentence sought by Milton’s attorneys.
“I did not intend to harm anyone and I did not commit those crimes levied against me,” Milton told Judge Edgar Ramos before the sentencing, Reuters reported.
Prosecutors stated that Milton has shown little to no remorse for his actions. In a letter to Ramos on Sunday, they wrote that the judge should consider Milton’s “profound denial of accountability and insistence on blaming others.”
