Israel has launched a series of devastating air strikes on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the tragic deaths of nearly 90 individuals, including numerous children who were asleep at the time. The United States, Israel’s key ally, once again vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
One particularly harrowing attack occurred in Beit Lahiya, a residential area in Gaza’s besieged north, where at least 66 people lost their lives. According to Palestinian health officials, most of the victims were caught off guard while they slept.
Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital nearby, described the horrific scene as bodies and remains littered throughout the area. The majority of those affected were women and children.
In response to this tragedy, hospital staff worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and retrieve bodies despite limited resources and ambulances. The situation was described as dire by Abu Safia due to the overwhelming number of casualties.
In another part of Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood, Israeli bombardment claimed the lives of 22 individuals including 10 children. This relentless violence has resulted in over 44,000 deaths and 104,000 injuries over more than a year.
1-14: Ceasefire resolution blocked by US
The ongoing conflict has left many residents facing starvation as aid supplies dwindle. Israel initiated its military campaign following an attack by Hamas that resulted in significant civilian casualties and captives taken hostage last year.
