Tracking Storm Boris: Devastating Floods Hit Central Europe

Severe weather conditions caused by Storm Boris have led to devastating floods in central and eastern Europe. Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Alpine‍ regions of ‍southern Germany, Austria, ⁣and Hungary have been particularly affected by this extreme rainfall.

In addition to the heavy rain and flooding that has tragically ⁤resulted in loss of life, there have been exceptional snowfalls in the Alps.⁢ Strong winds have contributed to the formation of massive snowdrifts in upland areas. The unsettled weather is forecasted to continue until Monday and Tuesday before high pressure gradually settles in from the north. It will take ⁤some time for river levels to‌ return to normal as temperatures rise this week causing snowmelt in alpine regions.

Meanwhile, off the coast of the Carolinas, an area of low pressure is present. While not originating from tropical sources, it could potentially develop into a tropical storm as it moves northward over warm‍ waters. This⁤ could bring damaging winds and heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding along the southeast and mid-Atlantic US coastline.

Japan ‍experienced multiple heatwaves during the summer of 2024 with⁣ record-breaking temperatures recorded throughout. The average temperature for three summer months⁣ was significantly above normal with Tokyo expecting unusually high temperatures reaching 34C (93.2F) later this week.

As colder air moves in from the north over the weekend and early next week,⁤ temperatures are expected to drop by about 10C bringing them slightly below seasonal averages.
