The Team Seeking Out Ukrainian Children Who Have Gone Missing

WASHINGTON — Anastasia, a 16-year-old girl from southern Ukraine, was offered a chance to go to Crimea by the Russian Army when they took over Kherson. Her mother was told it would be a holiday away from the war. However, as time passed, Anastasia realized that she might not be allowed to return home. Fortunately, a nonprofit group called Save Ukraine sent her mother on a bus to find her, and they now live in a shelter in Kyiv run by the organization.

Anastasia is grateful to be alive and with her family, as are the other children living in the shelter. She said, “There are some people who feel sorry that they had to leave their home. But we are also very happy because we understand life is so much more than a house that might be destroyed. Now we have an opportunity to go on, to move forward again.”

Since the Russian occupation of Ukraine 14 months ago, many children have gone missing. The conflict has left many families separated and struggling to find their loved ones. The situation is dire, and many organizations are working tirelessly to reunite families and provide support to those affected.
