Researchers have discovered American bullfrog DNA near the habitat of the critically endangered Pithecopus rusticus tree frog in Brazil. These small, brightly colored frogs were first found in 2009 and have only been seen in one location. With their habitat at risk, finding additional populations is crucial for conservation efforts. Despite extensive field surveys, no other populations have been found. To try a different approach, scientists collected water samples in the Wildlife Refuge of Campos de Palmas, about 2 kilometers from the original discovery site. The results suggest that this refuge could be a suitable location for another population, but it is separated from the known population by a highway.
