Foreign diplomats are being evacuated from Sudan’s capital as violence continues to escalate between rival military leaders. The exodus began with the U.S. military evacuating American Embassy officials early Sunday morning. Almost 100 people, mostly U.S. Embassy employees, were evacuated using helicopters from Djibouti, which is approximately 800 miles away. President Biden made the decision to evacuate the embassy on Friday as soon as it was safe and feasible. After several failed cease-fires between the two warring factions, another attempt for the Eid holiday marking the end of Ramadan offered a brief window when it was safer to fly in and out. Within hours of the U.S. announcement, France and Germany followed suit, with France helping to evacuate European Union diplomats, according to one of the bloc’s top officials.
