Exploring the potential outcomes if the Supreme Court decides to take on the TikTok case, a legal expert from Northeastern University suggests that it could lead to a ruling that sets a precedent for more limitations on freedom of speech.
Sahar Abi-Hassan, an assistant professor of political science at Northeastern’s Oakland campus, emphasizes the significance of this decision.
Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld a law requiring TikTok to separate from its Chinese parent company or face removal from the American app market. Should the Supreme Court accept TikTok’s appeal, it may delve into how freedom of speech applies to social media platforms in this modern age.
“This case could provide clarity on whether social media should have similar freedoms as traditional press,” Abi-Hassan explains.
If the Supreme Court supports the previous ruling, it could alter how we interpret and apply First Amendment rights, potentially paving way for increased government restrictions on free speech and press freedom.
