In recent times, the core principles of democracy have faced significant threats, ranging from efforts to overturn the 2020 election to widespread closures of polling locations.
Between September 2022 and October 2023, encompassing the 2022 midterm elections, a study was conducted involving over 45,000 Democrats and Republicans to assess their views on five specific violations of democratic norms:
The researchers also examined the respondents’ attitudes towards four types of political violence—assault, arson, assault with a deadly weapon, and murder—as well as their perceptions of the opposing political party.
Following a year of weekly surveys, the researchers discovered that large majorities of Americans are against violations of democratic norms and all forms of political violence.
“The widespread public opposition to anti-democratic behavior and political violence remained consistently strong throughout the year,” stated Yphtach Lelkes, Co-Director of the Polarization Research Lab and Associate Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School.
