This Monday’s solar eclipse is shining a‍ spotlight on some of the nation’s smaller‌ airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration had to briefly pause incoming flights at airports ranging from Burlington, Vermont, to southern Illinois on Monday⁤ morning in ⁤anticipation of ‍the total eclipse.

While flight disruptions are typically due to inclement weather‌ and congestion at major city‌ airports, the surge⁢ in demand for optimal eclipse viewing locations caused congestion at smaller airports. The prime spots to witness the solar eclipse in the U.S. stretch from Texas‌ to Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, and all the way to northwestern New York and Maine, as per NASA.

FAA’s traffic adjustments allow airports to manage⁤ the influx and prevent ground congestion.

“We had to temporarily close the runway to accommodate the influx of planes,” shared Alyssa Connell, operations lead at Southern Illinois Airport ‌in Murphysboro, Illinois.
