Semaglutide dampens mice’s drive to exercise

CHICAGO — A recent‍ study reveals that⁤ mice on the diabetes‍ and weight-loss drug ⁤semaglutide, known as ⁢Ozempic and Wegovy, showed reduced interest in running on a wheel. This ‌finding sheds light on the⁣ drug’s‍ impact on exercise behavior in ⁢rodents. Neuroscientist Karolina Skibicka from Penn State University and ⁣the⁤ University ⁤of Gothenburg⁤ in Sweden emphasizes the significance of this discovery, highlighting that there is still‍ much to learn ‌about‍ these⁣ drugs’ effects.
Mice typically run up to 10 kilometers a day when given free access ‍to a running wheel, according to neuroscientist Ralph DiLeone from Yale University. However, when administered semaglutide for seven‍ days, ‍both male and female mice ran approximately 38 percent‌ less than usual. Interestingly,⁤ once off ⁣the ⁣drug, ‌their running activity returned to normal levels.
