Russian-Ukrainian Citizen Sentenced to 8 Years for Breach of Confidential Cooperation

Petro Opalnyk, a citizen of both ‌Russia⁤ and Ukraine, has ⁣been handed an 8-year prison sentence for engaging ‍in confidential cooperation⁣ with Ukraine. The verdict was delivered by ⁢the Novgorod Regional⁢ Court, as reported by SotaVision.

Opalnyk was convicted ‌on charges related to his secretive collaboration with a foreign state and his alleged ‌efforts⁤ to ‌orchestrate voluntary surrender to ⁣captivity.

The ⁣prosecution had initially​ sought ‌a ⁢9-year imprisonment term‍ for Opalnyk, and the case was heard during closed court sessions.

Originally from the Vinnytsia region⁤ of​ Ukraine, Petro Opalnyk relocated ‌to Russia in 2011, where he worked in the construction sector in the Novgorod region before obtaining Russian citizenship in 2022.

Opalnyk was taken into ​custody in January 2023 at his residence. The investigation revealed that he had been inciting mobilized individuals to commit treason by divulging information about the whereabouts of Russian military units, facilitating the theft and transfer of military equipment, and promoting voluntary surrender ⁤to‍ the enemy. In March 2024,⁤ he was formally charged‌ with ‌attempting to organize voluntary surrender to​ captivity.
