Petro Opalnyk, a citizen of both Russia and Ukraine, has been handed an 8-year prison sentence for engaging in confidential cooperation with Ukraine. The verdict was delivered by the Novgorod Regional Court, as reported by SotaVision.
Opalnyk was convicted on charges related to his secretive collaboration with a foreign state and his alleged efforts to orchestrate voluntary surrender to captivity.
The prosecution had initially sought a 9-year imprisonment term for Opalnyk, and the case was heard during closed court sessions.
Originally from the Vinnytsia region of Ukraine, Petro Opalnyk relocated to Russia in 2011, where he worked in the construction sector in the Novgorod region before obtaining Russian citizenship in 2022.
Opalnyk was taken into custody in January 2023 at his residence. The investigation revealed that he had been inciting mobilized individuals to commit treason by divulging information about the whereabouts of Russian military units, facilitating the theft and transfer of military equipment, and promoting voluntary surrender to the enemy. In March 2024, he was formally charged with attempting to organize voluntary surrender to captivity.
