Rohan Dennis Faces Charges in Connection with the Tragic Passing of Wife and Cyclist Melissa Hoskins

The Australian Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has reportedly been charged with causing the death of his wife, the fellow professional cyclist⁤ Melissa Hoskins, ⁢after she was hit by a car⁤ in Adelaide on Saturday.

South Australia police did not name the couple but confirmed a 32-year-woman died after a crash on Saturday The⁤ force said a 33-year-old from the northern suburb of Medindie⁤ had been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving‍ without due care and endangering life.

It has been widely reported, including ⁢by ABC News,⁤ that the victim was⁤ Hoskins, who raced at the London and Rio Olympics and ⁣was ⁢world champion in team pursuit in 2015. It was also reported that⁣ her husband, Dennis, was the man who had been charged over her death.

Dennis has won stages in the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italian and Vuelta a España and won⁢ bronze medal in the road time trial at ⁢the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and silver in the team⁢ pursuit at⁤ the London Games⁤ in 2012. He retired from cycling in 2023.

The ‌couple married near⁤ Perth in 2018 and have a young son and a daughter.

In a post on X, CPA Women,a global association of female ⁢professional cyclists, said it was shocked by the‍ news of Hoskins’ death. It‍ added:⁢ “We send our thoughts to those who love her, starting with her children, and were lucky⁢ enough ‍to ride with her during ​an all too short life.”

ABC reported that Hoskins and ⁣Dennis had been due to lead a family cycling ‍event at the Santos ‍Tour ​Down Under. Details on the tour’s website⁤ have since been removed.

South ⁢Australia police said the fatal⁣ crash happened in Medindie on Saturday shortly after 8pm,⁢ when there were reports that a woman had‌ been hit by a car.

It said the woman ‌suffered ‌serious injuries and was taken to‌ the Royal Adelaide hospital for ⁢treatment but died overnight.

The force said officers specialising in crashes attended the scene along with detectives to examine⁤ the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police⁤ confirmed the driverwas known to the woman. He was bailed to appear before⁢ Adelaide magistrates court ​on 13 March.
