Rite Aid has reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, which accused the drugstore chain of “reckless use of facial surveillance systems.” As part of the settlement, Rite Aid will be prohibited from using any form of facial recognition security system for the next five years. The FTC’s complaint stated that Rite Aid had been using an AI-powered facial recognition technology from 2012 to 2020 to identify customers who may have previously shoplifted or engaged in problematic behavior. The company had compiled a database with customer images, names, dates of birth, and alleged crimes, but the photos were of poor quality and often sourced from security cameras, employees’ phones, and news stories. Consequently, the system produced numerous false-positive alerts.
