Rights group claims pro-Palestine voices being suppressed on social media, citing meta’s role

Social media giant Meta has been accused of systematically censoring⁢ pro-Palestine voices during the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict, according to a recent⁤ report by Human Rights⁣ Watch (HRW).

The report‍ claims that Meta, ⁣the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has removed‍ or suppressed numerous pro-Palestine‌ posts⁣ due to flawed ⁣content moderation policies, inadequate ⁤implementation, and ‍”undue government influence.”

According to ⁤the report, Meta has taken down or suppressed hundreds of pro-Palestine posts, which HRW argues ⁣exacerbates the suffering of Palestinians during a time of unimaginable atrocities and repression.

Deborah Brown,⁤ HRW’s acting associate technology⁣ and human rights director, stated, “Meta’s censorship‌ of content in ⁣support of ‌Palestine adds insult to injury at‍ a time of unspeakable ‌atrocities and repression already ⁣stifling Palestinians’ expression.”

HRW conducted an analysis of over 1,000 instances of Meta’s censorship in 60 countries, ⁣documenting a consistent “pattern of unwarranted removal ‌and suppression of protected speech,⁣ including peaceful‍ expression in ⁣support of Palestine and public debate about Palestinian human rights.”

In numerous‍ cases, Meta removed posts that contained newsworthy content documenting Palestinian‌ suffering or fatalities.‍ The company justified these actions by ‌citing its restrictions on “violent and graphic content,‌ violence and incitement, hate speech, and nudity and sexual activity.”
