Police say alleged Melbourne home invader killed during struggle

A man found dead in a driveway in‍ Melbourne’s outer north was allegedly part of a group of home invaders before he was shot ‍during⁤ a struggle, police say.

The man, who was yet to be identified, was found outside the⁤ property on Middlemount Street in Donnybrook, 30km north ‌of Melbourne’s CBD, at about 4.20am on Sunday.

Det Insp Graham Banks‍ said a search was under way for up to three others involved in the ⁢“targeted”⁤ attack on the⁤ home.

“These males were believed to be armed⁢ with at least one handgun and a machete,” he⁢ told reporters. “They’ve [allegedly] forced ‌their way into the home which ⁤was‌ occupied by a male and female ‌resident.”

Banks said at least one of the men allegedly assaulted the ‍woman before the male ‍resident ‍confronted the group.

“There’s been some sort ⁣of struggle and a firearm has been claimed off‌ one of the offenders who has come⁢ to the house,” the detective said⁤ on⁢ Sunday. “Shortly after that several shots have taken place.”

Police later⁢ found the ‍man ⁣dead in the driveway of the home with gunshot wounds. Banks said ⁣they were still⁤ trying‍ to ⁣establish “who has done what ⁤and in what sequence”.

“All I can say is the [deceased] person appears⁢ to be one of the offenders who have come in the home invasion,” he said. “How he’s come about those⁣ gunshot wounds‍ – that’s a ⁢matter for the investigation.”

Later, another man with gunshot wounds presented to Northern hospital in Epping ‍before being transported to ‍the Royal Melbourne hospital for surgery.

Detectives were working to establish whether he was involved ⁣but Banks said he was a‌ person of interest due to the‌ time ‍he turned up at‌ the hospital.

He said the female resident had been “struck with a machete” and was receiving medical attention⁤ for serious injuries, while the male resident was assisting with the investigation.

Banks said one ‍of the Donnybrook residents was known to police but ⁢would not comment on whether⁤ the shooting was linked to the underworld.

A firearm allegedly connected to the shooting was found at Kumalie Drive in Doreen about 20km ‌away.

“It’s quite a shocking incident but as I ‍say, we do not ‌believe it is related to anything beyond that⁢ household,” Banks said.

“It looks like ‌a completely targeted incident and it’s not something that the general‌ community⁢ would need to think would ‍happen to them.”
