Novel AI-Generated Research on Rat Genitalia Sparks Controversy in Scientific Community

Frontiers in Cell ⁣and Developmental⁤ Biology journal editors retracted a paper due to improperly generated supporting images by an AI image generator.‍ The retraction was prompted by concerns about the nature of the AI-generated figures. The use‍ of AI⁢ in creating ‌technical paper images has sparked ongoing‌ discussions⁣ in the science community. It remains unclear how these problematic images made it into a peer-reviewed journal. The authors, a ⁢team from Hong Hui Hospital⁤ and Jiaotong University in China, openly acknowledged using AI to create the images and credited Midjourney. Frontiers’ policy‍ allows AI-generated materials as long ⁤as their ⁤use is disclosed, but also requires fact-checking, which was not done in this case. Initially, Frontiers claimed the article had been corrected, but it was later retracted.
