Norwegian Officials Create Sculpture in Memory of Freya, the Walrus They Killed

Last summer, a walrus weighing 1,300 pounds arrived in Oslo and quickly became a local sensation. The rare guest was named Freya, after the Norse goddess of love, beauty, and war. Despite warnings from officials to keep their distance, Freya spent time in highly populated areas, even climbing onto boats and threatening to sink them due to her weight. However, Norwegian authorities declared her a threat to human safety and killed her in August, a move that sparked controversy.

Now, a sculpture called “For Our Sins” has been unveiled in her memory at Kongen Marina in Oslo. Norwegian artist Astri Tonoian spent months creating the sculpture based on photos of the animal.

The death of Freya divided a country known for diplomacy and a love of nature.
