While the prevalence of full-time work-from-home setups may have decreased post-pandemic, hybrid work arrangements are now a permanent fixture in the workplace landscape.
According to Brian O’Rourke, a research manager at IDC, this shift has posed challenges for facilities managers and operations teams.
Organizations have had to adjust leases, reduce space, and modify floor plans to accommodate the new way of working. However, the reduction in workspaces has led to a situation akin to musical chairs. To address this, companies are turning to desk booking software solutions to allow employees to reserve workspaces and necessary resources.
The emergence of hybrid work was not the anticipated outcome for many employers. Despite initial return-to-office mandates in early 2022, employees have resisted the idea of coming back full time.
As Tori Paulman, VP analyst at Gartner, notes, the expected return dates have been continuously pushed back, with employees showing a preference for hybrid work arrangements. Recent data from Gartner’s Global Labor Market survey indicates that only 14.7% of employees still work from home full time, while 43.9% have adopted a hybrid model. The trend is expected to continue, with 80% of desk workers likely to spend more than half of their time working remotely over the next two years.
