Microsoft has announced the retirement of the original version of Teams, seven years after its launch. The classic version will no longer be supported after July 1 and will be completely discontinued a year later, preventing users from accessing it.
Last October, Microsoft introduced the new 2.1 version of Teams, boasting improved speed and reduced memory usage compared to its predecessor. This update marks a significant change to the collaboration app that has been competing with Slack since its debut in 2017.
Teams has seen a surge in popularity, reaching 320 million monthly users, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when video meetings became essential. Despite its success, not all users have embraced Teams wholeheartedly.
Microsoft has outlined a timeline to phase out classic Teams on its admin site, with no new features being added and support for resolving issues being discontinued. Users will receive notifications within the app about the outdated version as the end of support approaches.
Access to classic Teams will be cut off on July 1, 2025, with an earlier end date of October 23, 2024, for users on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and macOS Sierra.
While the new version of Teams offers improvements, some features from the classic version will be lost in the transition.
