Reason behind Srettha Thavisin’s removal as prime minister
Srettha Thavisin, from the Pheu Thai Party, was ousted by a 6-3 vote from Constitutional Court judges after a petition by 40 senators citing ethical concerns over his appointment of a controversial figure.
The controversy stemmed from Srettha’s choice of Pichit Chuenban, a former lawyer with a criminal record, leading to accusations of unethical behavior and ties to billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra.
Srettha’s removal marks the fourth time a Thai prime minister has been ousted by the Constitutional Court in the past 16 years.
Introducing the new prime minister
Paetongtarn, 37, the youngest child of Thaksin Shinawatra, emerged as the new prime minister with strong support from her party and allies in parliament.
Known as Ung-Ing, she is a graduate of Chulalongkorn University and previously managed her family’s hotel business before entering politics in 2021.
Despite giving birth shortly before the 2023 elections, Paetongtarn’s rise in politics has been swift, culminating in her election as Thailand’s new leader.
