Al Jaffee, the award-winning cartoonist famous for his work with the satirical publication Mad Magazine, has passed away at the age of 102. His granddaughter Fani Thomson confirmed that he died due to multi-system organ failure in a Manhattan hospital on Monday. Jaffee was a prolific artist and holds the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a comic artist, starting with his first publication in Joker Comics in 1942. He retired from Mad in 2020 after contributing to the magazine for over 50 years.
He was a pioneer of some of the magazine’s most influential features, including “Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions,” where a benign question leads to numerous unexpected sarcasms, and the Mad fold-in, the magazine’s inside back page that cleverly turned one work into another previously hidden image.
