Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati urgently appealed to the UN Security Council (UNSC) to intervene as Israel’s relentless bombardment has resulted in the deaths of over 620 people in just three days.
A special meeting was convened by France on Wednesday, where efforts were unveiled to broker a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Mikati condemned Israel for violating Lebanon’s sovereignty with airstrikes and drones, urging for immediate de-escalation to prevent further terror among Lebanese citizens.
He emphasized the need for a strong stance from the UNSC members to halt the aggression and safeguard his country’s safety.
The recent bombing raids by Israel have claimed 72 lives on Wednesday alone, marking one of Lebanon’s bloodiest days in recent memory according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot disclosed ongoing efforts with American partners towards a ceasefire plan lasting 21 days for negotiation purposes.
Deputy US ambassador Robert Wood expressed hope that the proposed ceasefire would pave the way for peaceful discussions and avoid a repeat of past conflicts like in 2006.
