Introducing Microsoft’s latest Copilot+ PCs powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite hardware, a game-changer for Windows. This move mirrors Apple’s shift to Arm architecture with its M-series Macs, but not all existing Windows applications are compatible with Arm-powered PCs.
The good news is that most applications will run smoothly, thanks to Microsoft’s Prism translation layer. However, not all apps will be compatible.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Arm Copilot+ rule #1: No guarantees
The transition to Arm architecture is significant. Without the Prism translation layer, existing Windows apps wouldn’t function on Qualcomm Snapdragon PCs. This is similar to Apple’s transition with Rosetta software for Arm-based M-series chips on Macs.
Unlike Apple, Windows will continue to support Intel and AMD processors alongside Arm-based PCs. While many existing Windows apps will work on Arm-based PCs, some may not be fully functional due to compatibility issues.
However, certain apps may not work well with the Prism translation layer, and some hardware devices may not be compatible with these PCs. Additionally, professional applications may experience performance issues.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Arm Copilot+ rule #2: App compatibility issues
Some applications may not function properly through Prism and require developers to port them to Arm. This may not happen for all apps, especially existing business applications.
Look out for:
- File sync tools integrated with File Explorer: These tools must be ported to Arm for proper functionality. For example, Google Drive cannot be installed on a Windows on Arm PC at launch. If this tool is essential, you’ll need to access Google Drive via a web browser or use a third-party syncing app.
- Hardware devices requiring manufacturer-provided…
