(Bloomberg) — BYD Co. unveiled its latest high-performance fully-electric supercar, the Yangwang U9, at a live-streamed event in Shanghai. Priced at 1.68 million yuan ($233,450), the car is positioned to compete with luxury gas-guzzling options from rivals like Ferrari NV and Lamborghini.
The Yangwang U9 is designed exclusively for the China market and boasts impressive specs, including a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 2.36 seconds and a top speed of 309.19 km/h.
Despite being known for its affordable EVs, BYD has become the world’s largest EV seller, surpassing Tesla. The company’s luxury models are marketed under the Yangwang and Fang Cheng Bao brands.
As a post-Lunar New Year price war looms in China, BYD is banking on the demand for high-end products with better margins. The company plans to launch other pricey EVs under the Yangwang brand later this year, including a luxury sedan.
