Wildfires are raging through a national park in Brazil, enveloping the capital city of Brasilia in smoke as firefighters battle to contain the flames.
Over 490 firefighters are currently on the front lines, working tirelessly to put out fires that have already consumed 2,000 hectares (4,942 acres) of the Brasilia National Park conservation area. This is just one of many wildfires that have erupted across the country amidst an unprecedented drought.
The fire has broken out into four main fronts, all concentrated in the eastern part of the park, as reported by ICMBio, the government agency responsible for managing the park.
To combat the flames, three aircraft are dropping water while a helicopter is aiding in monitoring the burnt areas, according to an official statement from ICMBio.
“The fire spread rapidly due to high wind speeds, low humidity levels, and scorching temperatures,” stated Joao Paulo Morita, a coordinator for ICMBio’s fire management team.
