Global COVID-19 public health emergency declared over by WHO

On May 5, the World Health Organization declared that COVID-19 is no longer a global public health emergency. Infectious disease specialist Peter Chin-Hong from the University of California, San Francisco, believes that this decision is reasonable and follows the lead of many countries. However, he also notes that this does not mean that COVID-19 is no longer a global health threat. As of May 3, the WHO has reported over 750 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide, and nearly 7 million people have died from the disease, including over 1.1 million people in the United States alone. The U.S. public health emergency is set to officially end on May 11 (SN: 5/4/23).
