General Motors is making big changes in its leadership team, with the retirement of long-time head of manufacturing, Gerald Johnson, and the hiring of former Tesla and Google executive, Jens Peter “JP” Clausen, to take his place. Johnson, who has been with the company for 44 years, will be passing the baton to Clausen, who brings a wealth of experience from his time at Tesla, Lego, and Google.
In addition to Johnson’s retirement, GM also announced the surprising departure of Mike Abbott, executive vice president of software and services. Abbott, a former Apple executive, had only been with the company since May.
These changes come as GM continues to make strides in its manufacturing and sustainability efforts, with a recent focus on producing Level 1 face masks at a plant in Warren, Michigan. The company is clearly looking to the future with these new leadership appointments, and the automotive industry will be watching closely to see what comes next.
