June 2023, Victor spends most of his days at his “second home” in East Harlem. OnPoint NYC, a nonprofit organization, opened two overdose prevention centers in November 2021, providing a sense of community for Victor and others. These centers are the only officially sanctioned overdose prevention centers in the United States, allowing supervised drug use and responding to overdoses. Despite opposition and challenges, OnPoint NYC’s executive director, Sam Rivera, believes in the positive impact of these centers.
