The AРT4 Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow has officially closed its doors. Founder Igor Markeen announced the closure on Instagram, citing the increasing risks involved in operating the museum after 17 years of success.
The museum housed a diverse collection of artworks by renowned Russian and Soviet artists such as Ilya Kabakov, Erik Bulatov, and Dmitry Prigov, among others.
In 2019, the AРT4 Museum featured an exhibition by Alexei Navalny titled “With Arrestee Respect and Fraternal Warmth,” following his release from prison. The museum also showcased activism-themed exhibitions by groups like Pussy Riot and “Voina,” as well as by Petr Pavlensky.
In 2020, the museum faced scrutiny during searches related to the persecution of Petr Verzilov. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Markeen relocated to London.
