The impact of industrial growth and increased consumption on the environment worldwide has led to a rise in emissions, waste, and pollution from landfills.
The traditional linear economic model, which follows a “take-make-dispose” approach to resources, is proving to be unsustainable.
New Zealand’s food manufacturing sector plays a significant role in these environmental challenges. However, there is hope in adopting a circular economic model that promotes sustainability.
We have delved into the practices of six major food manufacturing companies in Aotearoa New Zealand that are dedicated to embracing circular-economy principles. Our goal was to assess their focus on reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering materials.
Various factors such as consumer awareness, government policies, supply chain complexities, and financial investments influence the adoption of circular practices within these companies.
our findings reveal that New Zealand food manufacturers are slow in transitioning towards circularity. There is a lack of understanding about circular processes as the traditional linear model continues to dominate.
