Chicago’s United Center and McCormick Place were illuminated with a dazzling display of blue lights, surrounded by enthusiastic supporters holding placards for the second day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Tuesday.
Here are the key highlights from Tuesday’s event, from prominent speakers to main talking points:
The Obamas Show Support for Harris
Former US President Barack Obama took the stage to deliver the night’s keynote address, endorsing Democrat Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.
During his speech that lasted over thirty minutes, Obama praised President Joe Biden, his former running mate, and criticized the Republican candidate, Donald Trump.
Referring to Trump, Obama stated, “Donald Trump views power as a means to his own ends. We’ve seen this before, and the sequel is usually worse. America is ready for a new chapter, a new story. We are ready for President Kamala Harris.”
Michelle Obama also spoke passionately in support of Harris, receiving thunderous applause from the audience. She expressed, “Hope is making a comeback. Only Kamala Harris truly understands the unseen labor and unwavering commitment that has always made America great.”
Pro-Palestine Protesters Confront Police
Outside the convention venue, protesters advocating for the Democrats to cease funding and arms sales to Israel clashed with police. They chanted slogans reminiscent of the anti-Vietnam War protests in 1968, demanding a similar level of activism.
Displaying Palestine flags and banners, the demonstrators were met with police in riot gear who dispersed and arrested at least 72 individuals, according to the Chicago branch of the National Lawyers Guild.
