Can you imagine looking at someone’s face and seeing it distorted every time? That’s the reality for people with prosopometamorphopsia, or PMO. A new study allows you to experience the world through the eyes of someone with this rare condition. The hope is that this will raise awareness about the severity of PMO and help others understand the challenges faced by those with this condition. The patient in the study described fellow shoppers as looking like “an army of demons,” highlighting the impact of PMO on everyday life. With fewer than 100 cases reported since 1904, PMO is not well understood, and patients experience a wide range of facial distortions. This visualization is specific to the patient in the study, but it provides valuable insight into the kinds of distortions people with PMO may see.
