Being small and having a long nose is beneficial for dogs. On average, dogs worldwide can expect to live for about 10 to 14 years. However, life expectancy varies among breeds, with small dogs tending to live longer than large dogs. Factors such as genetic history and body type also play a role in life expectancy. Data scientist Kirsten McMillan of Dogs Trust, a dog welfare charity based in London, acknowledges the complexity of this issue and the need for further research. McMillan and her colleagues collected data on individual dogs from 18 different U.K. sources to explore how body and head size might influence canine life spans. The analysis included more than 150 pure breeds as well as crossbreeds, with over 580,000 records and about 284,000 dogs that had died.
